EPISODE 4
After touring the Harbor and Watts with Janice Hahn, checking
out Downtown and South L.A. with Jan Perry, and tasting the best
of the West Valley with Dennis Zine, Eric Garcetti turns the spotlight
on his own 13th District.
Stretching from Hollywood to Echo Park and across the L.A.
River to Glassell Park and Atwater Village, the 13th has seen much
more of an upsurge in restaurants than one episode of Flavors
of L.A. can count. Garcetti's already compiled one list of
his top restaurants, and even more have sprouted since he first blogged
those 31 flavors. This episode focuses on three
special district haunts:
At Canele, fine bistro dining reaches across the L.A. River. This new Atwater
Village restaurant is well known for its farmer's market-fresh
ingredients and its large communal table, and was named one of
Pulitzer-Prize winning food critic Jonathan Gold's "99
Essential L.A. Restaurants."
On the other side of the district, Marouch presents classics
of Middle Eastern fare. Not only is Marouch also on Jonathan Gold's famous
list, but it's on his agenda for the day: the critic joins the councilmember
to sample the tastes of this restaurant on the outskirts of Hollywood.
For dessert, the Council President joins Scoops' proprietor Tai
Kim for a chance to create Strawberry-Black Pepper ice cream - - not the
strangest of flavors available at this small sweet shop tucked behind the
campus of L.A. City College.
